The present book is Mr. Banerjee’s personal account of his experiences from his childhood to work areas till he retired in 2014. It narrates several ups and downs and through his narration one can see the picture of his times – growing up in a small town in West Bengal, studying in one of the prestigious engineering colleges and working in the government. It is a source of valuable oral history for future generations.
Born in December, 1935 in Egra, District. Midnapore Ranendra Nath Banerjee started his schooling at Memari in the District of Burdwan. His father Surendra Nath Banerjee was a State Government employee.Though Ranendra Nath had always wanted to take up Medicine as his future career he could not fulfill the same as the Kalna College did not have Biology as one of the subjects. He was then only 14yearsold and his parents did not want to send him to a College where he would have to stay in a hostel. Thus his destiny was made and he graduated from the Bengal Engineering College,Sibpore, in Civil Engineering in the year 1957.
While in the service he was fortunate to get the confidence of his seniors including the Chief Engineer for his sincerity, application of his knowledge and dedication to the work. He was selected to assist the WHO expert team who came over to Calcutta to investigate the reason of Cholera epidemic in Calcutta. He has served both in the government departments and in the private sector and had the opportunity to work in many prestigious projects in India and abroad.
