The Return to Beginnings is a memoir of a woman who traces her beginnings to revisit the people who shaped her life. Her attempts at understanding the world around her without pretence makes her an outcast. To survive in a community, she learns to lie, but her inability to lie to herself keeps her outside the fence all her life. Her successes at her work contrast with her failings in personal life. Her mother leaves her because of her intent to marry a Christian. Her relationship with a young painter collapses after a child is born to them. To get back a morsel of the happy days of her childhood, she brings together the two things that remain of her past: her childhood home and her mother. At sixty-three, she has become her mother, alone and smoking at her regained paradise. Her home, her daughter and her memoir remain the returns from her life.
