Abhilasha Kumari has a love for literature and an innate sense of justice which led her to study both literature and the law. She had her schooling in Loreto Convent, Tara Hall, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. She did BA. (Hons.) in English from Indraprasha College, Delhi University. Switching over from literature to law, she enrolled as a student of law and obtained a Bachelor of Law degree from the Himachal Pradesh University. Thereafter she enrolled as an advocate and practised in the High Court of Himachal Pradesh. Apart from her private clients, many of whom were from socially and economically deprived backgrounds. She represented several Boards, Corporations, Municipalities and Universities.

She was appointed as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel in the High Court of Himachal Pradesh. She was later appointed as Additional Advocate General for the state of Himachal Pradesh. Abhilasha Kumari was elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh on December 2, 2005. She was transferred to the High Court of Gujarat and made a permanent judge on 25 Sept, 2006. She served in the High Court of Gujarat till she was elevated as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur. She retired as such on 22 February 2018. She was then appointed as the Chairperson of the Gujarat State Human Rights Commission, which position she held till her current appointment. At present, Abhilasha Kumari is serving as a Judicial Member of the Lokpal of India.
