Born in Dinga District Gujarat in what is now Pakistan, Brij Bhalla was educated at Delhi University India, Long Island University, New York and at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, US, from where he earned a doctorate degree in English Literature.
Brij Bhalla has had a long and distinguished teaching career in Delhi University retiring as Professor of English and Principal of Delhi University’sDyal Singh College. He has also been visiting professor at Mosul University, Mosul, Iraq.
Brij Bhalla has done notable critical work on D.H. Lawrence and on America fiction and Indian literature in English and has been published in national and international journals. He has translated several major works into English including Bankichandra’s classic Durgesh Nandini and P.C Chunder’s Samar Garal Khandnam. His translation of the Punjabi poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s celebrated verse epic Luna won him the prestigious Delhi State SahityaAcademy Award in 2003. His transliteration of the love legends of Punjabi in 1973 was acknowledged as a pioneering work. He has also translated the American author Betty Smith’s novel joy in the morning into Urdu.
Recipient of several awards and fellowships, Brij Bhalla was a Shastri Fellow at Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada and has visited major American educational institutions in America on the Fulbright Educational Administrators fellowship in 1985. He was awarded the honorary citizenship of Tucson. Arizona in recognition of his workin the field of higher education.
Semblances his first collection of poems in English, was acclaimed as a significant contribution to Indo-English Poetry.Cosmic Dance and Other Poems is his second collection of poems.
