About the Author

Hardaman Singh’s family migrated from village Thoa Khalsa in Rawalpindi during those heart-breaking days of partition to India, in August 1947. Two years later, his parents – Sardar Sardul Singh and Prithpal Kaurwere married. The family then moved to Pune and Hardaman was born there in 1952 in a military hospital. Later, the family settled in Bhubaneswar, the city chosen to be the capital of post-independent Odisha. Father Sardul Singh built up a fairly successful business in road construction in this nascent township, while Hardaman grew up with three younger siblings – a sister and two brothers. Was admitted into the Sainik School in Bhubaneswar, where he was trained to become an army man. His father had a taste for Urdu poetry and music and Hardaman heard a lot of poetry and music in his home which shaped his sensibilities in the early days.

The first event that shattered the otherwise happy life of the immigrant family was Prithpal Kaur’s death in 1967. For Hardaman, it remains a painful memory.

Hardaman’s ambition to join the army did not materialize. Instead, he studied for a post-graduate degree in Psychology in Utkal University at Bhubaneswar. He then joined his father’s business. But his heart was elsewhere.

He has worked for rehabilitation of spinal injury patients, has been associated with programs on adolescents, high risk groups for HIV/AIDS and has his own NGO called Centre for Good Living in the remote tribal district of Nabarangpur in Odisha.

His first book on poems was Crossroads, subsequently he has continued writing and is hopeful to publish his second collection.

Hardaman is married and has three wonderful daughters – Ritu, Reema and Niki. He lives in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
