Opinion

In a world of rat-race for material prosperity with the hollow humans, spiritually blind, groping in darkness Damyantee Devi Dabydeen's book functions as divine light that will certainly cure their blindness with epiphanic moments and purging and purifying minds with cathartic effect. Her 'Essence of Sanatana Dharma' is truly a guide to the fallen humanity.

About the Book

This book, Essence of Sanatana Dharma, is a work of much religious research and soul searching in the heartland of “Sanatana Dharma”. In my effort to make it as accurate as possible, I took an imaging journey into the past to discover more of what I already knew, or thought I knew, and the essence of what I would discover. It is prudent to admit this journey is a long way to go.

In this poem to SriKrsna, written September 18, 1965, while leaving for America, SrilaBhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada enthused:

“My dear Lord Krishna… How will I make them understand this message of Krishna consciousness? I am very unfortunate, unqualified and the most fallen. Therefore, I am seeking Your benediction so that I can convince them, for I am powerless to do so, on my own. I am sure that when this transcendental message penetrates their hearts, they will certainly feel engladdened and thus become liberated from all unhappy conditions of life”.

About the Author

My name is Damyantee Devi Dabydeen (nee Singh), the great, great, granddaughter of British Indentured Labourers who travelled from India in the 1880’s to British Guiana, seeking a better life for themselves and their children.

I grew up in East Canje, Berbice and was a school teacher for twenty years before immigrating to Canada where I worked in Retail Management and Information Technology sectors.

I have perused several Cantos of the Srimad Bhagavatam, Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Sri Tulasidasa Ramayana, The Ramayan of Valmiki, The Visnu Purana and several other texts, including lectures of Swami Vivekananda in his address to the Chicago Parliament of Religions held from September 11-27, 1893 and his lecture on Vedanta in 1897 at Lahore Pakistan. As I researched, I marvel at the sacrifices made by the ones who taught and wrote so that we may learn and practice this eternal dharma.
