About the Book

The imperial footprint in education was largely limited to creating university in metropolitan cities to sub-serve colonial administration. The primary education escaped a large swathe of population, creating a vicious circle of illiteracy, poverty and over population. The RTE Act, 2009 has been a landmark legislation, as it has ensured universal access as a matter of fundamental right. In the wake of economic liberalization in India in the 1990s the private sector has been playing a dominant role in bolstering access in college education and in the primary schooling as well. However, the quality of education at the grassroots and the academic outcomes have been largely unsatisfactory. The present work takes a kaleidoscopic view of education policy and its impact with specific thrust on inclusive education. It highlights a unique model by an inimitable social entrepreneur Dr. AchyutaSamanta who has setup the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) to mentor around 27000 children from KG to PG to realize the lofty ideal of true social empowerment of the most marginalized and the alienated. The Oslo Summit 2015 and the Sustainable Development Goals (2015) underscore the need to pay special attention to the quality dimension in education and calls upon the state not to abdicate its responsibility in providing wholesome value oriented education at the grassroot level. Most of the articles echo this concern.
