About the Book

Robert Frost: The ‘Dramatic’ in Poetry probes the dramatic world in Robert Frost’s poetry. As an extensive study on the subject, it approaches Frost’s poems-as-drama through the two constituent aspects of the dramatic – one, the poetic language where rustic colloquialism functions under the discipline of ‘sound of sense’, which Frost formulates on the coordination of the three layers of sound in language, and the other, the poet’s view of life as a continuous coexistence of opposites and a continuum of tension-resolution-tension. The book critically reads the select poems from Frost’s early poetic career (1913-23), ripest in terms of dramatic qualities, to explain extensively how these two aspects render the poems an audio-visual experience rich in dramatic dialectic. It analyzes the sound of sense and examines the poems in terms of the formulation. Similarly, it discusses the poet’s idea of tension and opposites in a world of contraries and probes the application of the idea in the poems. The study unfolds, in detail, a world – the ‘dramatic’ – that is central to Robert Frost’s poetry.
