Sitakant Mahapatrais A Major Voice In Modern Indian Poetry. Anthologies Of His Poems Have Been Published In All The Indian Languages And In Twelve Non-Indian Languages Including Spanish, French, German, Russian, Arabic, Chinese And Hebrew. Among The Awards He Has Received Are The Bharatiya Jnanpith, Sahitya Akademi Awards And The Kabir Samman.

A Distinguished Social Anthologist, Mahapatra Is The Foremost Interpreter Of The Oral Poetry Of Indian Tribes, And UNESCO Has Published A Volume Of Oral Poetry Titled They Sing Life, Edited By Him. His Earlier Collections Of Essays, The Curve Of Meaning, Gestures Of Intimacy, Barefoot Into Reality, The Role Of Tradition In Literature, Tradition And The Modern Artist And Beyond The Word Established Him As An Intellectual Of Rare Eminence.

The President Of India Conferred On Him Padmabhushan In 2003. The Soka University, Tokyo, Conferred The University’s ‘Highest Honour’ In A Special Convocation For His Contribution To Education And Culture. He Was The President Of UNESCO’s Inter-governmental Committee, World Decade For Cultural Development For Two Years. He Lives With His Wife At Bhubaneswar.
