Dr. D.S. Chougale has evolved as an important playwright in Kannada in the last couple of decades. Though a college professor, he doesn’t live in a cubicle all by himself. He has been actively resonating to the problems that the commoners of his land face. Renowned stage thinker Prof. K. Marulasiddappa opines that “he is capable of mirroring his ambience and is much influenced by Gandhi and Gandhian thoughts.” He is much influenced by “Gram Swarajya” of Gandhi and has finely woven the theme in his three plays (Dishantar, Udhvastha and Kasturba).
During the last two decades, staging of his plays have created vibrations in Karnataka. Various repertories like Rangayana Mysore, Natana of Mandya Ramesh, Neenasam and several regional drama troupes have staged his different plays throughout Karnataka and the shows have been well received. Rangayana of Mysore has been staging “Gandhi vs Gandhi” since the last 19 years.Of the 15 or so plays written and translated by Chougale several have been showcased in the National Drama Festivals at Delhi, Mumbai and Trivandrum. Vakhari Dhoos(Marathi version of Dishantar) has been staged by Akanksha troupe in Pune. Dishantar is one amongst several plays prescribed as text in several Universities of Karnataka.
Dr. Chougale has to his credit three short story collections, translations, exhibition of his paintings as well as more than 20 articles on stage activity. He has been honoured with more than fifteen awards. His stories and plays have been translated into Marathi. Comparative study of Kannada and Marathi Stage Activities has been his field of research.
